How to Grow Microgreens in 7 Steps

During this period that we're encouraged to extend the time between grocery store trips, try growing your own microgreens at home. Good varieties to enjoy are sunflower, radish, and salad greens.

Microgreens can be a delicious and nutritious addition to just about every menu; from salads to sandwiches to smoothies. They are quick to grow and their progress is fun to watch, making them a great project to do with kids too.

Order bulk packets of seeds online. Note any special instructions on the packet and follow the simple steps below to grow the seeds in a low-sided, plastic container with a removable lid. Take-out food containers work well. Stagger the planting to keep a continuous harvest going.

  1. Poke holes in the bottom of the container for drainage and use the lid underneath to catch excess water.
  2. Fill your container with 1-2 inches of soil.
  3. Heavily seed the tray and moisten soil.
  4. Cover with a sheet of plastic wrap and place in a sunny window.
  5. Keep the soil moist and turn the plastic wrap over daily to the dry side if too much condensation builds up.
  6. Remove the plastic wrap once the seeds sprout.
  7. Harvest when first true leaves appear by cutting off just above the soil.
